What Makes a Leader Is Work. A Leader Is One Who Builds Himself or Herself Through Work.
Peter F. Drucker (1909–2005), Management Thinker
Organizations often hope for the emergence of great leaders. However, there is no such thing as a born leader. A leader is a person who has developed himself or herself through a focus on results and by continually asking, “What needs to be done?” Through this process of disciplined thinking and action, leadership is cultivated and strengthened.
Reflection
As Drucker stated, I believe that leaders are not developed through training programs or classroom learning alone; rather, they are shaped through real work. Looking back on my own career, I feel that what truly fostered growth was not merely the acquisition of knowledge, but the experience of facing significant responsibilities and difficult challenges, and thinking, making decisions, and taking action in those situations.
The same principle applies to talent development. Training can provide knowledge and trigger new insights, but genuine growth occurs in the course of daily work. One of the most important roles of managers and mentors is not to provide too many answers. Instead, they should ask thoughtful questions and create an environment in which individuals can reflect for themselves and discover the answer to the question, “What needs to be done?”
Furthermore, leadership is not a matter of special talent. It is cultivated through the accumulation of initiative, responsibility, and commitment to one’s work. It is precisely when people face difficult challenges and unfamiliar situations that they are given opportunities to grow and lay the foundation for future leadership. Therefore, talent development is not simply about teaching knowledge and skills; it is about providing opportunities for people to think independently, take responsibility for results, and learn through meaningful work. Through that process, organizations are able to identify and develop individuals who create lasting value and become the leaders of tomorrow.
