『やるならば、創建当時の工人の心になってやりなさい』
西岡常一（つねかず）（1908年9月4日 – 1995年4月11日）、法隆寺専属の宮大工 棟梁。

所感：
この言葉は、弟子の薬師寺の宮大工石井浩司（こうじ）さんに、生前の西岡棟梁が教えの一つである。１９９０年ころ、薬師寺での建物の復興事業の時に西岡棟梁から、石井さんに語られた言葉だという。その当時の西岡棟梁は８０歳くらいで、がんを患いながらの現場指導であったとのこと。
薬師寺は西暦607年に創建され、日本最古の仏教寺院の一つ。その当時の宮大工の気持ちなって仕事をすることの価値とは何であろうか？石井さんは、大切な誰かの幸せを願って仕事をすることだと考える。当時、医師さんの奥様は末期がんだと宣告されていた。
寺院を建てる当時の工人の気持ちも世の中の安穏（あんのん）を願ってのことなのだと考えたそうである。仕事をするということは、自分の欲望を超えて、誰か他の人の幸せを願う行為であるとするならば、仕事とは、とても尊い神聖なものである。
My personal impressions and comments：
This phrase was one of the teachings that Nishioka taught to his apprentice, Ishii Koji, a temple carpenter at Yakushiji Temple. It is said that Nishioka told Ishii san this around 1990, during the restoration project at Yakushiji Temple. At the time, Nishioka was around 80 years old and suffering from cancer.
Yakushiji Temple was founded in 607 AD and is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan. What is the value of working as a temple carpenter at that time? Ishii san thinks it is to work with the wish for the happiness of someone you care about. At that time, Ishii san’s wife had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He thought that the feelings of the craftsmen who were building the temple at the time were also a wish for peace in the world.
If working is an act of wishing for the happiness of someone else, beyond one’s own desires, then work is a very precious and sacred thing.
