所感：
明治初期、新渡戸稲造は日本人の精神構造の根幹の良質さを海外に示す為に、「武士道」という英書を米国で発行する。『 武士道 』（Bushido: The Soul of Japan ）、 1899年刊行。基本的には、武士階級の精神修養の根幹的な思想であるが、広く一般庶民まで拡販し、評価もされ、日本人の基本的な道徳概念の一部を形成する。七つの徳から成り立つ。
「名誉」という言葉の解釈はとても難しい。日常の中でどのように理解するか深く考える。言葉の定義で示すと「人の品性、徳行、名声、信用等の人格的価値」ということになる。武士道の中で新渡戸稲造先生が訴えかけたかったのは、生き方の美学に関連する概念かとも思う。自分に恥じない生き方をどこまでできるか。それは第三者に評価されることではなく、自分自身の価値基準に対して問われることである。新渡戸先生はクリスチャンであり、その影響も言葉の解釈には反映されているのかとも思う。キリスト教的には、「神のみぞ知る」という概念があり、誰も観ていなくても、神様は見ているということになる。自分の価値基準に照らし合わせて、一日一日を丁寧に、恥じない生き方を一瞬でも長く過ごすことの大切さを問われているように思う。

“Meiyo” （名誉 | Honor）
“Honor — the sense of shame and moral modesty is the first lesson in virtue taught to the young.”
Reflection:
In the early Meiji period, Inazō Nitobe published Bushidō: The Soul of Japan (1899) in the United States to introduce to the world the moral soundness at the core of the Japanese character. Though his work distilled the ethical discipline of the samurai class, it was widely read by ordinary people and helped shape what became a part of Japan’s moral foundation.
The notion of “honor” is difficult to interpret. I often reflect on how it should be understood in daily life. Definitions generally describe it as a person’s moral worth—one’s character, conduct, reputation, and credibility. Yet within Bushidō, I sense that Nitobe was appealing to something deeper, something akin to a personal aesthetic of living.
It is the question: How fully can I live in a way that does not shame myself? This is not determined by how others evaluate us; rather, it is measured solely against our own inner standards.
Nitobe himself was a Christian, and I suspect this influenced his interpretation of honor. In Christian thought, there is the idea that “God alone knows”—that even when no one else is watching, God sees. In that sense, honor becomes the discipline of aligning one’s actions with one’s own conscience, moment by moment.
To live each day carefully, in a manner that does not betray one’s inner sense of rightness—even if only for a few more moments than yesterday—feels like the essence of what Nitobe was urging us to consider.
