新渡戸稲造（1862-1933）、日本の教育者・思想家。
『義』
『義は、「武士道」の最も重要な観念。個人的なものではない。「義」は「公儀」であり、「義務」である。自由の前に義務がある。』
所感:
明治初期、新渡戸稲造は日本人の精神構造の根幹の良質さを海外に示す為に、「武士道」という英書を米国で発行する。『 武士道 』（Bushido: The Soul of Japan ）、 1899年刊行。基本的には、武士階級の精神修養の根幹的な思想であるが、広く一般庶民まで拡販し、評価もされ、日本人の基本的な道徳概念の一部を形成する。七つの徳から成り立つ。
最初の定義は、「義」。何か、行動を起こすときに、その行動の根本に、個人のもつ私欲を超えた、義があるかどうかが重要な概念。その立脚基盤は、大組織でも、小集団でも二人の関係の中でも存在し、その存在の有無が相手への敬意となって現れる。当世で義を重んずることは、何かと窮屈かもしれないが、それでも仕事にせよ、人間関係にせよ、判断に迷った時には助けになる言葉である。

“Righteousness”
“Righteousness is the most important concept of ‘Bushido.’ It is not personal. ‘Righteousness’ is ‘public law’ and ‘duty.’ Duty comes before freedom.”
Reflections:
In the early Meiji period, Nitobe Inazō published an English book titled Bushido in the United States to demonstrate the inherent goodness at the core of the Japanese spirit to the world. *Bushido: The Soul of Japan*, published in 1899. While fundamentally the core philosophy of spiritual cultivation for the samurai class, it was widely distributed even to the common people, gained acclaim, and became part of the basic moral concepts of the Japanese people. It consists of seven virtues.
The first virtue defined is “Gi” (Righteousness). This is a crucial concept: when taking action, the fundamental question is whether that action is rooted in Gi, transcending personal self-interest. This foundation exists whether within large organizations, small groups, or even relationships between two individuals, and its presence manifests as respect for others. While valuing Gi in modern times might feel restrictive, it remains a guiding principle when facing uncertainty in work, relationships, or decision-making.
