以前、ホテルの客室清掃の作業現場を観察する機会があった。チェックアウトが遅くなった時には、客室清掃するスタッフの方とホテルの宿泊フロアーの廊下ですれ違ったりしたことはあったのだが、労働の現場を観察したり、清掃スタッフの方と会話をする機会はなかった。作業をする方の多くは、高齢の方であったり、外国籍の方であった。チェックアウト後の客室の中には、すさまじいほどの乱雑ぶりの状態の部屋もあるとのこと。それ以来、私はチェックアウトする時に、できるだけ清掃スタッフの方が、ドアを開けても落胆することのないように心がけるようになった。大学の講義でも、企業研修で若手を対象にする講義でも品質管理の話題と絡めてこの話をする。「後工程はお客様」、製造業で長くキャリアを積んできた私にとっては、なじみ深い言葉である。会ったことのない方を想いながら客室を出てチェックアウトする時、安心するのである。前職の人事の若い時に、自動車部品メーカーの技能訓練所を訪れた時、講義室の正面に額で掲げられ毛筆で力強く描かれた『来た時よりも美しく』の言葉が、心に刺さる。

Reflections:
I once had the opportunity to observe hotel room cleaning operations. While I’d occasionally passed cleaning staff in the guest floor corridors during late checkouts, I’d never observed their actual work or spoken with them. Many of the workers were elderly or foreign nationals. I heard some rooms left after checkout were in a state of utter chaos.
Since then, I’ve made a point to leave rooms in a state that won’t dishearten the cleaning staff opening the door. I share this story in university lectures and corporate training sessions for young professionals, linking it to quality management.
“The next process is the customer” – a phrase deeply familiar to me, having spent a long career in manufacturing. It brings me peace of mind when I leave a room and check out, thinking of someone I’ve never met.
When I was young and working in HR at my previous job, I visited a skills training center for employees of an auto parts manufacturer. There, framed and displayed prominently at the front of the lecture room, was the phrase “Leave it better than you found it.” It struck a chord deep within me.
